Gap Filling of Adverbs

Gap Filling Adverb : An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) a verb (he sings loudly), an adjective (very tall), another adverb (ended too quickly), or even a whole sentence (Fortunately, I had brought an umbrella). Adverbs often end in -ly, but some (such as fast) look exactly the same as their adjective counterparts.  For example

  • (i) She is walking slowly.
  • (ii) She is walking very slowly.
  • Gap Filling of Different types of Adverb :

    A) Adverb of time : they tell us when an action happened, but also for how long, and how often.  Before, ago, lately, yet, now, soon, yesterday, already, never are some examples of adverb of time

  • I'm going to tidy my room tomorrow
  • I saw Seema today
  • B)  Adverb of frequency : This adverb describes how often an action happens.  Examples are : Always, once, seldom, usually, rarely etc

  • I usually shop for groceries on Saturday mornings.
  • He is often late for work.
  • C) Adverb of place : this adverbs tells us where something happens . Examples are ; here, everywhere, down, near, away, backward, upward.

  • I searched everywhere I could think of.
  • I'm going back to school.
  • D) Adverb of manner  : they describe how something happens . Examples are : slowly, so, soundly, delightfully.

  • He plays the flute beautifully.
  • He ate the chocolate cake greedily.
  • E ) Adverb of degree :  Adverbs that increase, or intensify, the meaning include words such as: very, totally, completely, and absolutely. Adverbs that decrease or weaken the degree of meaning include words such as: fairly, quite, slightly, and a bit. Other examples : Almost, fully, very, enough, rather, quite, too, really.
